When do I Vote?

The Primary election for the Democratic party is in June 8, 2010. The winner of that election will enter the General election the following November.

What is the State Assembly?

The California legislature consists of two bodies, the Senate and the Assembly. It is the duty of the legislature to craft laws for the State, which are ultimately signed or vetoed by the Governor. There are 80 Assemblymembers in the State Assembly, all representing different districts throughout the State. There are 40 State Senators. If a bill is passed in the Assembly, a similar bill must pass through the State Senate before it goes into a conference committee where the differences are hashed out and negotiated. Once a final draft is agreed upon, then the final bill goes to the Governor to be signed or vetoed. As of now, there is a requirement that 2/3 of the legislature must vote to pass any budget bill. Last month, this caused immense havoc throughout the State, as legislatures barely passed a budget at the last minute, narrowly avoiding a collapse of the State government.

What district are you running in?
